The whole team at The Traditional Company is incredibly proud to have our Estate Fencing surrounding the stunning sculpture that commemorates the 10th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment.
The sculpture, which is three double-sided memorial plaques, measures seven meters long and 2 meters high, was made by Leicestershire sculptor Graeme Mitcheson. Showing members of the battalion on Somerby in the 1940s on one side and there is a list of names of those who died in the Battle of Arnhem on the other.
In September 1944, 582 men of the 10th Battalion men stationed in Somerby, Burrough-on-the-Hill and Thorpe Satchville left Salby Airfield to parachute 64 miles behind enemy lines into the iconic Battle of Arnhem. Tragically most were killed in action, wounded or captured by the Germans and only 36 returned.
The Traditional Company’s head office is based along with its fabrication unit, at Burrough Court Estate, Melton Mowbray. The owners Dawn and Fred Wilson kindly donated a half-acre site of Twyford Road to the charity for the sculpture. The charity group Friends of the Tenth raised more the £100,000 to fund a permanent memorial to the Battalion. It is wonderful to be part of such a fantastic community and we were delighted to be asked to install our Estate Fencing which contributes beautifully to the setting and doesn’t detract from the sculpture.
