When it comes to fencing for estates, farms and rural properties, traditional timber post and rail has long been a popular choice. It’s practical, familiar and fits naturally into a countryside setting. But how long does it really last?
As a manufacturer of steel estate fencing, we are seeing an increasing number of customers replacing existing timber fencing that has begun to rot or deteriorate, choosing steel as a more durable, long-term fencing solution.

Built to Last
One of the biggest benefits of steel fencing is its longevity. Our fences can last for over 60 years, providing a durable, long-term fencing solution. In comparison, timber fencing is exposed to the elements year after year and, over time, can suffer from rot, splitting, warping and general deterioration.
Steel, when correctly manufactured and protected, provides a much more durable solution. It is designed to withstand the demands of the British weather and the day-to-day conditions found on farms, estates and rural properties.
Timber fencing can require ongoing maintenance and, eventually, individual posts or rails may need replacing.
Steel fencing offers a lower-maintenance alternative. Once installed, it provides a strong and consistent boundary without the same concerns around timber deterioration. Over its lifespan, this can make steel a more cost-effective investment, particularly when future maintenance and replacement costs are taken into consideration.

Strength Without Compromising the Countryside Setting
Estate fencing needs to be practical, but it also needs to look right.
It provides a strong and secure boundary while maintaining the open character of the countryside. Its clean, traditional appearance works particularly well around country estates, paddocks, farms, driveways and large private properties.
Unlike heavier or more enclosed fencing options, estate fencing can define a boundary without unnecessarily obstructing views across the landscape.
They can either be left to weather naturally, allowing them to blend beautifully into rural surroundings, or finished in a colour of your choice.
Black remains our most popular finish, but we can also match your estate or property colours to create a completely bespoke look. We’re also seeing an increasing demand for green and grey finishes, offering a subtle alternative that works particularly well within the countryside.

Bespoke to Your Property
Another advantage of estate fencing is the ability to fabricate fencing to suit the individual requirements of each site.
At The Traditional Company, our steel estate fencing is manufactured by our own team rather than being a standard off-the-shelf product. This allows us to take into account the layout of the property, ground levels, curves, dimensions and the overall look you want to achieve.
We offer three different estate fencing styles, each designed for a different application.
Our Chatsworth four-rail fencing is a lightweight option, ideal for residential and amenity use.
Our Burghley five-rail fencing is our most popular range and provides a strong, attractive boundary suitable for light livestock such as sheep.
For larger or more boisterous livestock, our Highland five-rail fencing is our heaviest option, robustly built to withstand animals such as cattle and horses.
We can also manufacture electric fencing arms, which can be added to any of our estate fencing ranges where an additional electric wire is required.
Because everything is manufactured by our team, we can create fencing that works with the property and its surroundings, following the natural contours of the land wherever possible.
The result is a strong, long-lasting boundary that provides security and practicality without compromising the character or views of the countryside.
