Earlier in the spring, I was delighted to return to a classic Estate in Cambridgeshire some 15 years after my first visit. My memories of this wonderful setting… fabulous house, sweeping lawns leading down to the river with Parkland views to every direction. How this vista had changed in so few years, the magnificent trees (mainly beech) had peaked and were now gone.
Re-planting had been done, but sadly too late, the scale had been lost. Replanting should be planned and be on a regular cycle. All young parkland trees will need protecting from stock and deer. Estate tree guards are commonly used to this end. Our large tree guards, with fluted tops protect the lower branches, and also provide a valuable element of scale in these open spaces.
