Is mild steel strong?
Mild steel is a strong metal, although it tends to be more weldable, ductile and machinable than other types of steel. When it comes to garden edging, mild steel is a strong choice that not only looks great but is also able to withstand common garden machinery like mowers.
We have three thickness of mild steel garden edging available, all of which are strong and long-lasting.
How quickly does mild steel rust?
When allowed to weather naturally, mild steel will develop a natural rust patina in 4-6 months. The environment can make this patina develop faster or slower.
How long will mild steel edging last?
Mild steel is a long-lasting option for garden edging and can last for years. While the environment in different areas will affect the steel differently, it can last well over a decade, making it a great option for garden edging.
Does mild steel edging need a finish?
We recommend not adding a finish or painting mild steel edging, as this will allow you to enjoy the natural rust patina that forms. However, it is possible to add a finish or to paint mild steel if you want a different look.
How is mild steel different to stainless steel?
The big difference between mild and stainless steel is the fact that stainless steel’s surface is resistant to corrosion. This means it doesn’t rust or tarnish. In comparison, when left untreated, mild steel develops natural rust, creating a unique colour and patina over time.
