Is galvanised steel rust-proof?
Galvanised steel is rust-proof as well as resistant to corrosion. It has a zinc coating that protects the metal to stop it from rusting.
While this coating does eventually break down, this typically takes decades, so the metal has a long life.
Can galvanised steel be painted?
If you want to change the colour of your galvanised steel, it can be painted. You do not need to paint it to protect it, however, as its zinc coating is protection enough.
If you do decide to paint your galvanised steel edging, you need to make sure you use the right paint. Paint needs to be formulated for galvanised steel, otherwise, it will not last due to the metal’s protective coating.
How long will galvanised steel last?
Galvanised steel is incredibly hardwearing and can last anywhere from 30-170 years. What it is used for and its environment will affect how long it lasts, as these can impact how long it takes for the zinc coating to break down. However, as it can withstand moisture and difficult weather conditions, you will get decades of use from your galvanised steel edging.
