How do you maintain corten steel?
Corten steel is very low maintenance due to its protective rust layer. For the most part, you do not need to do a lot to maintain it. If you find that your edging has gotten dirty, you can clean it simply with a sturdy brush.
How quickly does corten steel rust?
The corten steel rusting process very much depends on the environment and it’s position. If it is subjected to wetter weather conditions, you will find that it rusts faster than in dry climates.
Typically, corten steel goes through 4 stages:
- It starts off with an oily residue coating it.
- The oily residue starts to break down.
- Months 3-6 typically see a rust-coloured “run off” coming from the steel.
- The steel will self-seal during the final weathering stage, resulting in a fairly consistent rust colour.
Does corten steel affect the environment?
Corten steel is environmentally friendly and won’t have a negative impact. Because it doesn’t need treatments like other metals, it can be argued that it is better for the environment than some other options.
Can you paint corten steel?
Typically, corten steel is chosen for the rust patina that it develops when it weathers. However, it can be painted if you want to change its look.
In some cases, such as if it is exposed regularly to salt water, corten steel will be painted to add an extra layer of protection in order to prolong its life.
How long does corten steel last?
Corten steel can last for decades – up to 8 times longer than common steel. It’s natural rust finish adds an extra layer of protection, which increases longevity. However, the envronment can impact how long it lasts s humidity, salt, soil acidity and soil density can all impact it over time.
